Gander Mountain Backpack | Rugged Outdoor Daypack

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

We built the Gander Mountain backpack for outdoor enthusiasts who demand reliable gear on every trail. This 28-liter daypack features weather-resistant ripstop polyester construction with reinforced stress points at every seam and strap anchor. The ventilated back panel keeps air flowing during steep ascents, while padded shoulder straps distribute weight evenly across long miles.

Multiple compartments organize essentials without forcing you to dig — a hydration sleeve accommodates up to a 3-liter reservoir, dual side pockets hold water bottles or trekking poles, and a zippered top pocket keeps maps and snacks within easy reach. Whether you’re logging summit attempts or day-hiking local trails, this backpack delivers the durability and comfort we’d want on our own adventures.

Construction & Durability

Construction & Durability

We chose 600-denier ripstop polyester for the Gander Mountain backpack because it resists tears and abrasion without adding unnecessary bulk. Every high-stress point — shoulder strap anchors, bottom panel, zipper tracks — receives bar-tack reinforcement to prevent blowouts under load. The water-resistant coating sheds light rain and morning dew, protecting contents during unpredictable weather.

YKK zippers glide smoothly even when dust or grit works into the tracks, and double pulls on the main compartment let you access gear from either direction. Reinforced grab handles at the top and side allow quick retrieval from truck beds or camp storage. This construction approach mirrors the engineering we apply across our duffel bag collection, where field durability takes priority over lightweight shortcuts.

Fit & Comfort System

Fit & Comfort System

Adjustable Harness

Padded shoulder straps adjust from 18 to 24 inches to accommodate different torso lengths, and the sternum strap stabilizes the load during uneven terrain. We contoured the back panel with vertical channels that promote airflow between your spine and the pack, reducing sweat accumulation on hot approaches.

Load Distribution

The ventilated mesh backing sits approximately half an inch away from your back, creating continuous air circulation without sacrificing stability. Hip belt attachment points (belt sold separately) let you transfer weight from shoulders to hips on longer treks. At 1.8 pounds empty, the pack adds minimal fatigue while maintaining structure under a full 28-liter load.

Organization & Storage Layout

Organization & Storage Layout

The main compartment opens wide via a U-shaped zipper, allowing full visibility of packed contents without unpacking layers. A dedicated hydration sleeve with hose port keeps water reservoirs secure and centered for balanced weight. The internal mesh pocket holds valuables like wallets and phones, while elastic loops secure trekking poles or ice axes externally.

Dual side pockets stretch to hold 32-ounce water bottles, and a zippered top pocket keeps trail snacks, sunscreen, and maps immediately accessible. We added a key clip inside the front pocket so essentials don’t migrate to the bottom. This layout prevents the frustrating gear shuffle that plagues single-compartment packs, keeping critical items within reach when you need them.

Perfect size for day hikes
I’ve used this backpack on six different trails this month, and it’s held up perfectly. The ventilated back panel actually works — my shirt stays dry even on steep climbs. Plenty of room for water, snacks, first aid kit, and an extra layer without feeling bulky.

Comfortable even when fully loaded
I loaded this pack with 25 pounds of gear for a full-day hike, and the shoulder straps never dug into my shoulders. The sternum strap keeps everything stable, and I love the separate pocket for my phone and keys. Great value for the quality.

Durable construction, smart layout
The ripstop fabric feels tough, and the zippers operate smoothly even after three months of regular use. I appreciate the hydration sleeve and the side pockets that actually hold my water bottles securely. Only wish it came in more color options.

Holds up in wet conditions
Got caught in a rainstorm on the trail, and while it’s not fully waterproof, the fabric shed most of the water. My gear inside stayed dry enough. The reinforced bottom shows no wear after setting it down on rocks and gravel repeatedly.

Great organization for outdoor gear
I’m done digging through a single-compartment pack to find my headlamp or trail map. The multiple pockets keep everything separated, and the internal mesh pocket is perfect for valuables. The reflective strips are a nice safety touch too.

Lightweight but doesn’t feel cheap
At under two pounds, this pack doesn’t add noticeable weight, but it still feels solid and well-made. The ventilation system really does reduce sweat buildup on my back. I’d buy this again without hesitation.

Gander Mountain Backpack Questions

The Gander Mountain backpack offers 28 liters of capacity, which provides ample space for day hikes, outdoor excursions, and daily adventures. This volume accommodates a hydration reservoir, extra clothing layers, snacks, first aid supplies, and essential gear without feeling oversized or cumbersome on the trail.

The backpack features water-resistant 600D ripstop polyester with a protective coating that sheds light rain and moisture. While it resists water penetration during brief showers, it is not fully waterproof for prolonged heavy rain. We recommend pairing the pack with our rain cover accessory for complete waterproof protection in wet conditions.

The Gander Mountain backpack includes a dedicated hydration sleeve with a reinforced hose port but does not include the hydration reservoir itself. The sleeve accommodates bladders up to 3 liters and works with most standard hydration systems. Our Gander Mountain Hydration Reservoir is available separately and designed specifically for compatibility with this pack.

Yes, the backpack features dual side pockets with elastic openings that secure trekking poles or ice axes vertically. Gear loops at the bottom of the pack accept additional straps or carabiners for attaching sleeping pads, jackets, or other overflow items. This external attachment system keeps bulky gear accessible without consuming internal storage space.

The adjustable shoulder straps accommodate torso lengths from 18 to 24 inches, fitting most adults comfortably. The sternum strap adjusts vertically along the shoulder straps to align with your chest position. For extended trips requiring additional load transfer, our optional hip belt accessory provides further customization for larger or smaller frames.

Spot-clean the backpack with mild soap and lukewarm water after use, avoiding machine washing which can damage the water-resistant coating. Hang the pack to air-dry completely before storage in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Periodically inspect zippers and stitching, applying zipper lubricant if needed and tightening any loose buckles to maintain performance over time.

This backpack is designed primarily for outdoor recreation rather than urban commuting, so it does not include a dedicated padded laptop sleeve. The main compartment can accommodate a tablet or small laptop in a protective case, but we recommend our urban commuter packs for electronics-focused carry. The internal mesh pocket provides secure storage for phones and smaller devices during trail use.
